The name Khouri is legendary in the world of Oriental Rugs. Their reputation is backed by three generations of knowledge gained through 100 years of experience, that has been passed down through three generations of Khouris. They are widely recognized as trusted experts in the field of valuable handmade rugs.
Khouri’s Rug Company is a family-owned and operated business in the truest sense of the word. Third generation family member Marion Khouri and her partner Joe Asack are at the helm of this thriving century old business.
Marion is the granddaughter of Ralph Khouri, who founded the business in 1923. By the time Ralph opened his first store on Boylston Street in Boston, he was very well known in the oriental rug business. The years prior to opening his store, Ralph traveled by train to New York and around New England with samples of rugs he had for sale. Ralph had already earned a solid reputation for quality and honesty. Because of this his store was an immediate success and Ralph opened several more stores in other cities and states around the country.
The company continued to grow, and Ralph needed more help, so he asked his son Ernie to join the business. Ralph taught Ernie everything he knew about the rug business. Over several years, Ernie accepted increased responsibility and eventually took over the ownership of the company.
By the 1960’s Ernie and his wife, who worked together in business, started to have children. With both parents working at the family business, 4 year old Marion and her brother spent more time in the store than they did at home throughout most of their childhood. They were OK with that! To them when they weren’t helping their parents, it was their well-padded dream playground where they could do anything without getting hurt.
Marion had always been an unofficial helper for her parents in the store. But she became an official after school employee of the store in her teenage years. At 19 years old she became a full-time employee, and later a manager.
In the late 1980s Marion wanted to move to Cape Cod. She and her partner Joe Asack opened a store in Hyannis which became one of the biggest area rug stores in all of New England, and they added satellite stores in Chatham, and Plymouth.
In 1992 Marion and Joe added the only full-service area rug cleaning, restoration, and repair facility on the Cape. The Khouri name is most famous for their expertise in oriental rugs, but they are just as experienced with other kinds of area rugs too. They regularly clean, repair and restore hand-hooked rugs, braided rugs, tufted rugs and even machine-made rugs. Regardless of the type of rug, get emotionally attached to their area rugs because of the memories attached to them.
For example, one person recently told Khouri’s that the home he grew up in over a half century before was listed for sale online. The online listing included a slide show of photos that included every room in the house. He immediately recognized a rug in one of the photos as being the very same rug he once played on in that home 60 years ago, It was still there! Seeing pictures of that rug flooded his mind with many fond memories of family members and childhood friends, most of whom are long since gone. Area rugs contain memories. They become like close friends, even like family members. Properly cared for area rugs can last for years, even generations. Khouri’s understands the connection people develop with their rugs. For this reason they want their services to be affordable for everyone. It is all about the rugs and the memories they hold for those how love them.
Khouri’s cleaning plant was and still is the only such facility located on Cape Cod. They started with a small leased space and handled all of the business aspects personally, including rug pick-ups and drop-offs, cleaning, and repairs.
Today, Khouri’s Rug Cleaning operates from their own 8,000 square foot plant staffed with a professionally trained crew of area rug cleaning technicians and rug weavers. Khouri’s has their own fleet of 3 trucks that are on the road 5 days a week traveling all over Cape Cod and the South Shore picking up and delivering rugs needing to be cleaned and repaired and then returning and reinstalling them back in the customer’s home once they are ready.
About Khouri’s
Joe joined Marion in the business over 30 years ago and he then spent time in New York to be trained by some of the best Iranian professional rug weavers there are. These weavers were respected friends of the Khouri family and they agreed to teach Joe all about oriental rugs and the differences between them depending on when and where they were woven and the different materials used.
Joe has become a recognized expert on all kinds of valuable handmade rugs. Insurance companies regularly seek their opinion about the value of various kinds of rugs for insurance purposes.
Khouri’s continues to wash and repair all of their customer’s rugs by hand just as they were originally intended to be. Some companies boast about their modern state of the art machinery to clean rugs, Joe winces when he sees that.
Handmade oriental rugs are valuable. Some heirloom rugs are worth over one hundred thousand dollars. They should never be cleaned by robotic machines. Those machines damage the fibers and burn the tips of the wool. Joe can tell right away if a rug has ever been put through one of those machines. The damage is irreversible. Think about it! Why would you trust your priceless one-of-a-kind heirloom to a machine? You would never run your favorite car through an automatic car wash, would you?
Although Khouri’s is famous for their work on priceless heirloom rugs. Khouri’s cleans, repairs, and restores most kinds of area rugs including hooked rugs, braided rugs, tufted rugs, and even machine-made rugs.
Khouri’s services are fairly priced and affordable. Khouri’s is a family business, and they treat their customers like they are part of their family. Often the relationship started with grandparents decades ago, then over time their children and today their grandchildren, even great-grandchildren.
